Polar Sailing

MaréMotrice organizes long-distance and/or polar sailing courses. The crew is composed of the skipper and four to five crew members. These courses are dedicated to people who have at least a basic knowledge of navigation. They allow you to become familiar with offshore and/or ice navigation. On a boat made for that.

These courses are also a laboratory of navigation without diesel. The Knut is equipped with an electric engine, and all the energy used by this engine is made on board, in a 100% renewable way. This is how we should be sailing tomorrow, so why not start right now?

2024 season: April 10 – 30 Delivery Reykjavik (Iceland) – Maniitsoq (Geenland)

A beautiful polar crossing in rather wintery conditions. Please contact benjamin@maremotrice.ch for further information.

2022 Season

August 13 – September 05, 2023 / Isafjordur (Iceland) – King Oscar Fjord (Greenland) and back

This trip is a pilgrimage in the footsteps of the writer Jorn Riel and his endearing characters, the trappers of North-East Greenland who inhabit the short stories of the Danish writer. Riel’s short stories are easy to read, delightful. Joining their gruff characters on a sailboat is less easy, but just as delicious.

..

This pilgrimage is like an expedition: a little mapped area, wild, isolated. The King Oscar Fjord and the region is subject to ice, lots of ice. Ice that comes down from the pole along the east coast of Greenland, ice deposited by the countless glaciers that dot the fjords. The ice conditions being different from one summer to another, our itinerary will depend first of all on it, and then on the weather. The end of summer is the best time to sail in the area.

..

The coast being dotted with protected anchorages, the crossing from Iceland being relatively short, we will always have a way to dodge bad weather. On the condition of being a little flexible on the itinerary. We have been dreaming for years to set up this expedition. By going there with our electric auxiliary engine and our green energy, we will realize something new.

The crew will be composed of the skipper Benjamin Ruffieux and a maximum of five crew members.

Navigation: about 800 miles

Price: 4’800 CHF (swiss francs)
